South African Coalition for Transitional Justice

We are a group of organisations and individuals working together for transitional and transformative justice in South Africa and throughout the world. Our vision is:

A humane world in which the South African government and people, and humankind globally respect their transitional and transformative justice obligations, challenge impunity for perpetrators, and build social harmony to ensure that human rights violations never happen again.

Many of our members have been active in fighting for justice and redress for apartheid’s crimes, during the apartheid years and since the end of Apartheid. The SACTJ was established by civil society organisations in 2011 to hold the South African government accountable to its obligations and commitments to justice, redress and reparation. In 2023, thanks to funding from the Constitutionalism Fund, the SACTJ registered as a non profit organisation, hired staff, and established on-going projects and a public presence, including the development of this website. The SACTJ is working towards holding a conference on transitional justice in 2024/2025.
